Dr Veronica Nicky ThomasDr Veronica (Nicky) Thomas Consultant Health Psychologist Dr Veronica (Nicky) Thomas is currently working as a Consultant Health Psychologist within the Department of Haematology at Guy's & St Thomas hospitals Trust, London UK Nicky is also an Honorary Lecturer in health psychology department in the department of Psychology at the Institute of psychiatry Kings College. She started the specialist health psychology service for people with Sickle Cell disease in 1997 and this specialist service has now been extended to provide health psychological input for medical haematology and haemophilia patients. She has specialist knowledge & experience in pain management, undertaking a multi-centred RCT trial evaluating the efficacy of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to manage pain in sickle cell disease and evaluation of communication & cultural awareness training for health care professionals. In addition she has significant experience in cultural differences in the experience of pain, the psychological aspects of sickle cell disease and haemophilia. Nicky has recently achieved funding for a sabbatical (1 day week per week, for one year) to undertake a scoping exercise across Guys, & St Thomas' Foundation Trust, Kings College hospital, and other associated district general hospitals within the newly accredited Academic Health Sciences Centre to identify other areas where health psychologists could make contribution to patient care. This project will be completed in September 2010. |

Dr Sara Trompeter Sara Trompeter is a specialist registrar in haematology on the UCLH rotation currently working at GSTFT. Her clinical interests are in haemoglobinopathies and she has dual accreditation (CCT) in paediatric as well as adult haematology. She is also involved in research at UCL and is setting up a multicentre study looking at microparticles and coagulation markers in sickle cell disease. |
